THE TRU-SOLUTION
Tru-Flex Metal Hose Corp.’s complete aluminum Tru-Lite™ Gas Lining System is available in a variety of inside diameters 3” through 12”, and kit lengths of 20ft, 25ft, 30ft, and 35 ft. All components are UL Listed for all gas fired heating appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, gas fireplace inserts, and stoves listed for use with Type B venting systems. The National Furl Gas Code NFPA 54 and ANSI Z223.1 give two specific guidelines to follow when venting category I gas fired heating appliances into a masonry chimney.

  1. The chimney must be lined and sized properly. Most masonry chimneys are oversized and absorb too much heat to be considered a proper vent. Gas appliances must be sized for proper venting. If the chimney is unlined, you must line it.
  2. If the appliance is fan assisted, it is important that you properly size and line the chimney in all cases.

IS YOUR CHIMNEY SAFE? WHY SHOULD I RELINE?
The potential hazards of using oversized or deteriorated masonry chimneys for modern gas appliances are often overlooked. If not properly maintained of sized, acids and moisture from natural gas combustion build up inside the masonry chimneys, which can cause deadly carbon monoxide leaks, loosen mortar (which can plug up chimneys), or cause extensive moisture damage.

Danger signs which we should be aware of include:

  1. Missing bricks from the top of the chimney are signs of possible mortar deterioration. If there are missing bricks, you must ask yourself, “Where did the missing bricks go? Down the roof or inside the flue? Is the draft being restricted? Is the chimney smoking back into the house?”
  2. Pieces of clay tile line or brick in the clean out area.
  3. Black substance (called creosote) coming out between the bricks or behind walls within the house. Creosote odors may mean creosote has seeped right through the chimney.
  4. Creosote running down the outside of the chimney.
  5. Moisture on inside chimney walls within the house.
  6. Moisture leaking back into the home.

If any of these danger signs are observed, discontinue use of the chimney until a professional can properly examine the situation.
